JackThreads Reaches 2 Million Member Mark

Men’s lifestyle brand Thrillist bought Jackthreads, a members-only shopping club about 2 years ago. Good move since JackThreads has reached the recently reached the 2 million member mark.

Thrillist founder and CEO Ben Lerer said that JackThreads has a small member pool when they acquired it. It only has 100,000-150,000 members at the time. It has reached the 1 million mark in July 2011 and continued to grown from there.

Part of the company’s strategy is to  host flash sales with top apparel brands. Recently, it launched private label line collection called Goodale, the best selling sale the site has ever hosted. JackThreads plans to expand beyond flash sales and will allow members to search inventory for specific items.

The company’s growth is organic since the top sources of referrals come from the invite a friend feature of the site and 80% comes from free traffic sources. They plan to launch new iPhone and Android apps very soon and has a native iPad app in the works. Currently, 20% of sales come from mobile and they plan to grow on this. New apps will collect user data and allow “personalization” and marking favorite brands.

The site’s regular customers are males in their early 20′s and are living in the top 20 U.S. cities. Surprisingly, L.A. (not NYC) is the biggest market served. These men are not as embarrassed with shopping and sharing as stereotypical males may be.

Lerer says “one of the things we are working on is creating a shopping experience where when someone does say ‘you know, I just need a f***ing pair of shoes,’ we will soon be a place people come to.”
